How to Avoid a Hangover

Here are some great tips I just found online.

Before

  • Eat lots before you start drinking. Good foods are: Dairy products (like cheese), foods high in fat and/or protein (like nuts), soup, etc
  • Have a glass of milk before you start drinking. It coats the lining of your stomach
  • Take B vitamins and vitamin C before and after drinking (shortcuts: orange juice contains vitamin C and beer actually contains a substantial amount of vitamin B1 :)

During

  • Stick with one type of alcohol. Variety is not the spice of life if you want to avoid a hangover
  • Avoid smoking. Smoking constricts your lungs and decreases the oxygen flow to your blood stream. Less oxygen means a stronger hangover
  • Nibble during the evening
  • Avoid mixing drinks
  • Avoid carbonated drinks (like sparkling wines). These speed up the absorption of alcohol
  • Avoid dark drinks (like brandy, whiskey, red wine, etc)

After

  • Get some fresh air (walking home with friends is great – the fresh air will help you sober up, and feel better in the morning)
  • Avoid taking paracetamol, aspirin, acetaminophen or ibuprofen
  • Keep a large bottle of water by the bed, incase you wake during the night
  • Try to get as much sleep as possible

Next Day

  • Eat fruit and a fried/grilled breakfast the morning after (things like eggs, toast, bacon, pancakes, sausages, etc)
  • Avoid caffeine (like tea, Coke or coffee). Caffeine causes dehydration
  • Drink energy drinks like Lucozade the following day
